This article gives the big idea behind the professional learning community. There are three big ideas structured here which include ensuring that students learn, a culture of collaboration, and a focus on results. First, there has to be a shift from teaching to learning. I agree that learning for all has to become more than just a political statement that we make in the moment and then forget about later. We have to take these terms literally and deliver that into the classroom. The second big idea involves creating that culture of collaboration- the type of collaboration that is essential is not the kind of committees or meetings like the ones geared toward operations or a committe like the "sunshine committe." What is important is to strive for the collaboration that is centered around, " Teachers working together to analyze and improve their classroom practice." Finally, big idea number three encompasses a focus on results. This idea brings me to my current assignment at Rocketship. We have assessment wall meetings, and the primary focus is to look over the assessment results to reconstruct instruction. Just recently we made our achievement goals for the year for each grade level and each subject area like math and literacy. In sum. many times schools and/or districts are distracted by other goals such as creating science labs, and the focus is drawn away from raising achievement.
